Investing News Morning Roundup – October 25, 2021
Investors can think of themselves as a ship plowing the high seas and, in that scenario, there are strong currents of inflation and stimulus driving them forward. The currents of inflation and stimulus are running the same way right now, but that is about to change. The stimulus current is about to change, though, with the Fed set to start tapering its bond purchases very soon. Their hope is that the inflation current will also ease. That is far from a certainty. It wasn’t long ago that the plan was to start tapering in early 2022 but as inflation pressures have grown, that start point has moved forward, with the start of tapering expected to in November. This evidences a greater concern over inflation at the Fed as compared to six months ago. Consumers know exactly what the Fed is talking about.
Last week Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said, “I do think it’s time to taper, and I don’t think it’s time to raise rates.” Many investors and commentators do not agree and think it’s time to normalize rates too. Powell does not agree, at least not yet. On Friday he commented, “Fundamentally, I think our policy is in a good place. I think the market generally understands where we are and what’s going on. I’m not blessing every asset price or anything like that.” Any action on interest rates will likely require more evidence of labor improvements in the U.S. economy, the main gauge the Fed has used when analyzing what to do with stimulus and interest rates. There are still 11 million open jobs in the U.S and “help wanted” sign everywhere.
This week is Big Tech earnings, with Microsoft (MSFT), Twitter (TWTR) and Alphabet (GOOG), Google’s parent company, reporting Tuesday while Apple (AAPL) and Amazon.com (AMZN) are expected to report later in the week. Stock markets have posted three straight weeks of gains and investors are hoping the plethora of earnings this week will push markets to new all-time highs. So far, higher prices are being successfully passed on by companies, investors will look to see if that trend continues, and if so, look for new highs for markets.
Speaking of Big Tech, there were come interesting comments from Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Twitter (TWTR) and Square (SQ). “Hyperinflation is going to change everything,” Dorsey tweeted Friday night. “It’s happening.” He added, “It will happen in the US soon, and so the world.” Does Dorsey really know what a gallon of gas or milk costs? Does he peruse the aisles of Whole Foods checking out prices? It’s hard to imagine that’s the case…
Lawsuit Against Google Alleges It Charges More Than Twice Its Rivals for Ads
The lawsuit against Alphabet’s (GOOG) Google, being led by the Attorney General of Texas, was unsealed Friday after a federal judge ruled it could be, and it has some very interesting tidbits. The suit alleges that Google takes 22% to 42% of every advertising transaction that passes over its network. The suit describes this cut of transactions as an amount that is up to four times what other platforms typically charge. There is a quote in the suit from a senior Google executive who says of the platform “The analogy would be if Goldman or Citibank owned the NYSE.” The suit describes several Google strategies to lock advertisers, helping it win 80% of the auctions on its own platform. Convenient. A Google spokesman said, “This lawsuit is riddled with inaccuracies and our ad tech fees are actually lower than reported industry averages.”
What Happens to ESG Investing When the S&P 500 Energy Sectors Rises 54%?
For the last few years ESG investing has been all the rage. Stocks that are “green,” or in some cases are close to green, have been bid up consistently. Investors have seen many of the companies as a mixture of green and technology, sectors that have done very well over the last few years. Calls to transition away from fossil fuels had left many traditional energy companies behind as the “green” companies soared. But a funny thing has happened this year, traditional energy is soaring. The S&P 500 energy is up 54% from its low and has risen much more than any other sector this year. ESG investors, and the funds that focus on ESG, will now be tested—will investors stick with funds that eschew the by far best performing sector? When these funds inevitably post sub-par performance, will ESG investors be happy to accept poorer performance for the sake of feeling green? For most investors, green is Marathon Oil (MRO), up almost 150% this year.
Sibanye-Stillwater Acquiring Brazilian Mines on Strong EV Battery Demand
With the demand for EVs growing, so too is the demand for batteries to power them. Nickel is central to those batteries and Sibanye-Stillwater (SBSW) is in advanced talks to acquire two mines in Brazil. It is looking to acquire one of the largest open-pit nickel mines in the world run by Atlantic Nickel. It is also looking at Mineraco Vale Verde where a copper and gold mine is being developed. Nickel is a key component used in the cathodes of lithium-ion batteries. Sibanye-Stillwater is best known as a gold miner though does also mine precious metals used in industry. It recently acquired a nickel hydrometallurgical processing facility in Le Havre, France where it could use nickel from the Brazilian mine.

2021.10.25 08:15 hagralic Sharing my experience when I was 7

(English isn’t my first language, please excuse my mistakes)
I was 7 when I was abducted and beaten to the point that my whole body was purple. I still remember every detail vividly. I was taken to a secluded part of the forest that looked dried out if that makes sense. The man choked me with his belt like a freaking yo-yo! I didn't cry, because he told me that if I cry he would kill me. I didn’t shed a tear after the first punch because I want to live. I was too naïve to believe him. The kick to my head finally knocked me out. It felt like something came out of my body. Everything felt light and calm.
I just want to say that I'm not a religious person, never read the bible or anything similar. I believe in a higher being but not in religions. My body felt like it was floating. Then I saw a golden gate from afar and my grandfather (he died a few months before the incident) coming out of it. He went towards me, and held my hand, and brought me back to my body. He never said a word, but his expression was warm and calm. I still remember how it felt, like an intense hypnic jerk. I was gasping for air. When I opened my eyes, the man wasn't there anymore.
I saw two paths, a bright and a dark path. I crawled towards the bright path and asked for help when I made it out. The ground was filled with small branches, dried leaves, and small rocks. The doctors and the police doubted me when I told them that I crawled out of the forest because I don't have any scratches on my body. I only sustained severe bruises, a broken neck, and a bloody mouth and nose. I was probably raped, but I don’t have the heart to ask them and make them remember.
I’m now 26 and I can’t ask for help in public places. I can’t scream for help if there’s something wrong. I almost drowned and I didn’t even ask for help, good thing my brother saw me and pulled me up. I am aware that this is not normal, but my voice won’t come out. I have no problem asking for help in private though, so that’s cool. Also, I’ve been living with the thought of “as long as I’m alive” since I was 7. Honestly, sounds unhealthy, but I want to see it as an optimistic view of life.

2021.10.25 08:15 KINGSAGE01 So I’m rewatching A Silent Voice

And something I just noticed is you can see Shōko Nishimiya in the hair salon reading a magazine and it looks like she was just bullied. Her mother also seems to be getting her hair down by Shōya Ishida mother, it’s probably not her but if it is that’ll be even more crazy.
I might be super late to noticing this so if I am I’m sorry for wasting your time😭😭

2021.10.25 08:15 Heisenberg_USA A "wealthy" tax, the biggest trick in the book used to steal your wealth.

When people see a tax for the "wealthy", they automatically think it own't effect them so they don't complain.
When people don't complain, they know it will be easy for them to pass it into law, then as time goes on, more people in the middle class get screwed over while the rich get even richer, just like how they managed to grow more wealth in the last 100 years ago.
If people support the Yellen's proposed "wealthy" tax then Have Fun Staying Poor.
