2022.01.27 23:09 RepresentativeBee703 I want to form more meaningful relationships

Hi everyone,
Throwaway because I don't want this to potentially come to the attention of any coworkers.
I (27M) have found myself spending more and more time isolated since around when the pandemic started.
I was very introverted as a kid and was bullied quite a bit, I was overweight and am multi-racial and my features were quite different than most people I went to high school with. My parents divorced when I was 12 and my mom moved across the country. It was a messy divorce and my dad took care of me and didn't have any romantic relationships until I was 26 and wasn't generally very positive in attitude towards women while I was young. For a long time I only saw women as sexual objects and had difficulty staying friends with any until the past couple years, and even that is hit or miss (but so are most of my relationships.) At university I was able to make a lot of friends and was more outgoing than any other period of my life, but a lot of this revolved around partying, alcohol and drugs. I rarely drink (once a month or 2) and will smoke on occasion but have slowed down on that quite a bit as well. I do/did feel I made genuine connections with a lot of my friends from school.
I rarely communicate or open up with any of the people that I consider(ed) my close friends for a long time. I rarely talk to my dad, who I considered to be my best friend for a long time. And I have opened up to him once in the past 6 months - year about some of the stress and pressure I'm feeling and how a lot of my relationships seem to be failing (I used to talk to him about most of my problems and sought his advice, but now I disagree with the way he sees the world. I feel like he's progressed and I've regressed.)
After school I worked as a teller at a bank (shit job in my eyes at the time, and I felt I was entitled to better.. though I was a very average student at a very average university.) A second finance degree later and some other jobs in between and I am now an investment banker (the job I thought I deserved out of my first round of school.) I try to keep my work hours to 60-80 per week during busy times. But I constantly find myself wanting to check my e-mails whenever I'm away. The main driving since I graduated high school is that I want a high paying/status job, and saw finance as the easiest way to achieve it.
In social situations I've defended my professional peers at the expense of my friends feelings (I don't remember how these situations exactly played out, just spoke with my friends about it at a later time and know how I made them feel.) I look down in a way at a lot of my old friends who weren't able to "overcome" their situations whether it be substance use, being stuck in a less desirable job, etc. I don't feel deep connections with most of the individuals that I consider to be "on my level," though they are who I choose to interact with most often because I feel they challenge my views and equip me better to have a more successful career or life. I think I've likely made many of my friends that I look down on in one way or another feel unheard.
I realize I'm not that smart or special and have met many people that solidify that thought process. I have very limited relationships with my mom's side of the family. Partly divorce, though I have been told that I think I'm too good for that side of the family. On my dad's side there is a history of lawyers, doctors, investment bankers, etc. I'm only close with my dad and his mom, so not really close with his side of the family either. Though they haven't made similar comments towards me.
I find myself thinking, just grind a few more years and you will be able to slow down and make more meaningful relationships and find a partner later once I have enough experience to move to a high paying role with less hours. My main goals are that I want to have a family and afford my kids opportunities I felt I missed out on and be able to support my parents as they age.
I moved to a new city for the job that I mentioned earlier, and have made a couple attempts to go and meet people. Classes, bars, conventions, etc. I've met people I would be interested in potentially spending time with. I got one guys number but never reached out to him, this was months ago and I wouldn't feel comfortable reaching out at this point. I've asked one girl for her number after a nice conversation (got turned down, said she was recently out of a relationship and it seemed genuine.) I've also interacted with a couple/few other people that when I later reflected on wished I had tried to get their contact info (though I'm not sure I would have reached out.) After a few months I kind of gave up on going out and just wake up, work, cook dinner, and either work again or consume content until it's time for bed.
How do I make friends and stop thinking of relationships from a position of how much value they can bring into my life?
Thanks for reading.

2022.01.27 23:09 Prestigious_Boat2821 Summer CS options for an HS Junior

As the title says, I am a high school junior looking to major in CS in college. I do not have much experience, and I am taking the Harvard CS50x course and will finish in the next few months. I will then continue to practice and hopefully start work on my own projects. I am wondering what I can do in the summer whether it is an internship or a college course that would both enhance my college application and enhance my skills. Anything is appreciated!

2022.01.27 23:09 Elsalla What are my chances? // Current PT considering switching to PA

Hi everyone,
As stated in the title, I am currently employed as a PT in an inpatient rehab hospital. For various reasons, I am considering leaving the profession. But I love working in healthcare and becoming a PA seems to fit most of my career goals. However, nothing is definitive, and I really haven't put in the time to meet any pre-reqs yet. This post is mostly to put out feelers to determine if this is something I have a chance at pursuing within the next year.
First off, I'll be honest. There really is only one PA program I am considering applying to because it is 20min from where I currently live, and pragmatically it just makes the most sense. I am not looking to pick up and move my whole life. I have reviewed the program requirements, and they seem the most reasonable to achieve given my situation as someone currently in the workforce and not looking to spend years completing pre-reqs. Essentially the requirements are: the basic science pre-req coursework that must be completed within the past 10 years. completion of an undergrad degree. Cumulative, science, and pre-req coursework GPA must be greater than 3.25. Minimum 200 hours of direct patient care. a personal essay. 3 letters of recommendation. Shadowing healthcare professionals and PAs is highly recommended. The application deadline for my preferred program is in November.
More about me:
I graduated with a BS in Chemistry in 2014. I graduated from PT school in 2018 with my DPT. While in PT school, I also earned a Masters in Clinical Anatomy and Applied Health Sciences. I began working in an inpatient rehab hospital in late 2018 as a staff PT, and have worked there ever since. About a year into my job (Jan 2020), I assumed a role as a therapy team leader. For context, my hospital's caseload is divided amongst 4 PM&R attending physicians, and the therapy staff and case managers are divided into teams to work with a specific physician and their caseload. As team leader, I essentially facilitate communication between the different departments (medical staff, therapy, nursing, and case management primarily) and problem solve various patient-related issues with the appropriate staff. In 2020 I also earned a specialty certification as a certified wound care clinician, and in late 2021, I assumed the role as a co-lead for my hospital's wound care team. As a wound care clinician/program leader, I complete wound consultations and weekly reassessments; I make wound care recommendations and modify when appropriate. I do this for any patient in the hospital with orders for a wound consult, not just patients on my team. As a result, I frequently communicate with the other physicians, as well. The different roles I possess have really helped me grow as a healthcare provider because I have to consider each patients' case from multiple perspectives, and I've been told my coworkers hold me in high regard and value my input. I'm an ambitious person and I love to learn and expand my skill set, however, I'm beginning to feel the limitations of my scope of practice as a PT. I can't prescribe medications, order imaging, or perform low-level procedures and I want to be able to so I can more actively help my patients. And so here I am!
cGPA: 3.97
sGPA: 4.0
Pre-reqs: Pretty much all of them are completed, as they are essentially the same required course for PT school. The only exception is microbiology, which I can take at community college over the summer.
PCE: I have been employed as a PT for a little over 3 years, so at the minimum I have 10,400 hours. Actual hours is definitely more than that due to my PT school clinical rotations and extra shifts I've picked up over the years.
GRE (not required, but considered if taken): taken in 2014 for PT school application - verbal 155, Quantitative 157
LOR: None obtained yet, but I know the physician I work closely with as part of my rehab team will write one. The physician that oversees the wound care program I co-lead will likely also write one. I can also get LORs from my Director of Rehab (a PT), a podiatrist I work closely with, and an internal medicine NP that I work closely with and plan on shadowing
Shadowing: None at this time. I'm hoping I don't have issues with arranging shadowing as I have a few colleagues I can call to arrange something
I am genuinely looking for constructive feedback. I feel as though I am a competitive candidate since I am a PT, but I am worried about the age of my pre-reqs and if that is a red flag for PA schools. I have never applied for PA school, so I am not aware of what the actual process is like and what they look for. Many thanks in advance!
